System Facilities - Case Study
CruZin' Magazine

Dear System
Facilities:
We've been publishing the Northwest's Own CruZin' Magazine for 10 years. We've
always been heavy on our color content and today we run at least 200 color
"car" photos in every issue. For the first seven years we utilized
conventional drum scanning for our color separations at a cost of about $6.00
per photo, plus $1.50 per photo for cutting the ganged individual photos and
impostion/stripping. This accounted for a production hard cost of at least
$1,500 per issue.
Then three years ago we heard about LGN (Laser Generated Negative) and we
implemented this process utilizing your NewsCraft paper. Using 11" x
17" NewsCraft vellum we produce two-page spread negative plate-ready
"film". There is no stripping/impostion costs to speak of and the net
result, including toner and all related expenses are less than $1.00 per photo.
The quality is right there with what we were getting via drum scanning.
CruZin' Magazine is printed on 50lb. book stock and we print our negatives at
1,200 dpi (interpolated) using an 85 line screen. As long as we stay "on
top" of our printer, the end product is quite satisfactory, as evidence by
the fact that CruZin' is the best-selling automotive title on newsstand in the
Northwest. Our cover is 70lb. gloss and our color photos are still
conventionally scanned, but we're looking forward to switching that to LGN as
technology permits.
Additionally, I'd like to mention the great assistance that is always available
from the Systems Facilities staff. They're always right there to help with
problems or source materials, equipment and related items. Thanks for being
there for CruZin' Magazine.
Sincerely,
David Marin,
